On 22 November 2019, the Japanese court allowed Carlos and Carole Ghosn to speak for an hour by video for the first time since Carlos Ghosn was released on bail.
After 8 months without being able to communicate, they were able to say a few words to each other. But only under strict surveillance as a spokesperson for the family reiterated in a statement detailing the conditions in which this call took place, depriving the Ghosns of the intimacy to which any couple should be entitled:
“After 8 months of no contact, and 7 requests to lift the bail condition preventing them from communicating, we have been informed that Mr. Ghosn and his wife Carole have only been granted a single video conference call. It will be limited to an hour, in the presence of lawyers and the conversation will be restricted to topics pre-determined by the judge. The conversation will also be recorded and reported back to the Judge and the prosecutors. We will continue to pursue a removal of these wholly unreasonable, inhumane bans altogether for M. Ghosn and his wife’s fundamental human rights to be respected.”
